Director of International Programs
Barron received his BA with Honors in International Studies from Rhodes (then Southwestern at Memphis) in 1971 and went on to complete a PhD in Government and International Studies from the University of South Carolina. From there, he joined Le Moyne College, in Syracuse, New York, where he served the college in various academic capacities, including three years as interim Dean of Arts and Sciences.
Barron returned to Rhodes in 2012 as the Coordinator of the Buckman International Studies Initiative and is now particularly happy to serve as Director of International Programs in the Buckman Center for International Education, knowing first-hand how the generosity of the Buckman family to Rhodes College has transformed international studies and international education at Rhodes.
Barron’s international focus is southern Africa; his first visit to Botswana was in 1984, and since then, he has frequently visited South and southern Africa doing research, attending conferences, giving lectures, and leading delegations of students and faculty on study tours. After being awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities summer teaching fellowship at Yale University, he joined Yale’s Southern African Research Program (SARP) which, notably, made him part of the SARP delegation observing the 1994 election which ended apartheid and made Nelson Mandela president of a democratic South Africa.
