Argentina has seen rapid growth of social movements in recent decades. The symbolic, social, and political links between street mobilization, human rights, judicial processes, and democracy illustrate the country’s status as a pioneer promoter of human rights in the region. This program focuses on topics associated with social justice and collective mobilization at the grassroots, local, regional, national, and transnational levels through the study of historical and contemporary cases. This program aims to empower learners with tools and skills to take an active role in academic discussions and contemporary struggles around social change and human rights. A flexible program model allows you to focus on the topics you find most appealing.
Buenos Aires is the heart of this eclectic collection of social movements and organizations. You will live with a local family for six weeks and have the option to stay in the city during the four-week Independent Study/internship period. During classes are at Centro de Estudios de Estado y Sociedad (CEDES), one of the top think tanks in Latin America, you will study the most relevant issues on the current human rights agenda from an intersectional approach, working on the interconnection between theory and practice, and critically reflecting on possible alternatives and strategies to drive social change. You will have the opportunity to discuss these issues with memory and other human rights activists, factory workers. as well as Afro, migrant, feminist, LGBTQIA+ and other grassroots activists advocating for human rights, equality, and social justice.
During excursions to Patagonia, Salta, Jujuy, and Rosario, you will analyze the experiences of struggle in these territories and their articulation with the national human rights agenda. Here you will meet rural families struggling to maintain their livelihoods, and indigenous communities organizing to retain their territory, identity, and natural resources. The excursions are unique opportunities to witness how different organizations with similar demands articulate and fight for their rights.
You will also have the opportunity to develop your Spanish language skills through 45 hours of classroom learning, cultural immersion, homestays, and excursions.
SIT is an all-inclusively priced study abroad program – including academics costs, excursions, accommodations and meals, airport transfers, and health insurance. Be sure to discuss how study abroad costs are handled at your school with your study abroad advisor and read the website for more specific information.
Petitionable programs are available to students in the event that any of our 200+ affiliated partner programs do not seem sufficient for your academic needs. Fewer than 10% of petitions are granted. The decision is based on a number of factors that include, but are not limited to: the quality of the petition, the rationale of why an affiliated program can not fit your needs, and why the petitionable program is an exceptional fit for your academic studies. Due to the low probability of receiving a petition, we recommend applying for an affiliated program backup in the event that your petition is denied.

You might run into issues with phone use in other countries, but this usually depends on your phone service provider. Many have international options/packages that will allow you to use your phone in a different country or you can also buy a separate phone made for international use. If you fully own your phone, it should not be difficult to acquire an international sim card once you arrive, and if not, you could use an old phone still in your possession. Work with your own phone service provider to find the best option for your situation.

Airfare (Greatly depends on location)
If flying from Memphis to Buenos Aires, cost is between: ~$1200 - $2000 USD for a round trip
If flying from Memphis to Mendoza, cost is between: ~$500 - $800 USD for a round trip
These are generalizations, but a ballpark estimate assuming you are leaving from Memphis. We recommend purchasing refundable/changeable airfare, for unforeseen situations. We recommend you purchase the “Cancel for Any Reason” trip protection insurance mentioned on the Buckman Center’s website. Once you purchase your airfare, you have 14 days in which you can add your ticket to this insurance policy so as to be able to recoup some of its expense in the event you are unable to travel.

Immunization - travel vaccinations are not normally covered by many private health insurance plans (although some plans will cover them) and are not covered at all by Medicare.
Please review the CDC’s site for required and recommended vaccinations and medicines well in advance of travel.

Make sure you have medical and accident insurance while outside the US. Check with your program, as most programs offer this protection. If your program does not include medical and accident insurance, you must ensure that you purchase adequate coverage. The Buckman Center can help identify insurance carriers for students. Alternatively, if you are included in your guardian’s/parent’s insurance plan, you should check with that insurance carrier to see if you remain covered while outside the US.

Food/Room (if not included)
Rooming: Dependent on choice of stay and program cost coverage
Be aware that some programs require housing deposits that could cost several hundred dollars. This is the case for most ISEP programs.
Private Flat: average ~$200 - $500 USD per month
Student Dormitory: average ~$10 USD per month
Be sure to do ample research on housing options with your program in my mind
Note that if you spend above average on food in the US, you will most likely do the same abroad

International Bank Account and ATM fees
Students will most likely continue to use their domestic banks unless they are staying for over a year (most students do not open a new bank account for a semester or year-long stay) However, if you are interested in opening a foreign bank account, do extensive research before making any decisions. Be aware of ATM fees that your personal bank may have in foreign countries.

This is subjective but be aware that these are costs that will come up. Average entertainment costs include sports, cinema, excursions, shopping, souvenirs, etc. Be aware of any independent travel on weekends (transportation, hotel, meals, entrance fees to museums, etc.).
