Historic Rennes is located in Brittany, the northwestern region of France, about 190 miles from Paris. Brittany is known for its fascinating mixture of French and Celtic cultures. The city center of Rennes reveals architectural treasures from the 14th through the 19th centuries. An important university town, Rennes is home to more than 45,000 students, with a total population of 250,000. Rennes is also centrally placed to allow for a variety of cultural excursions in short distances, such as the beaches at Normandy, the Mont St. Michel, Pont-Aven and the home of painter Paul Gauguin, and a variety of other historic sites within a few hours. For several years, it has been the top-rated town in many national magazine surveys about the quality of life in France and is particularly well-known for its environmental sustainability initiatives, music festivals, and efforts to preserve Breton cultural traditions.
